Small School Jazz Band

Large School Jazz Band

The Small School Jazz Band is open to students from schools with 1100 students or less.

The Large School Jazz Band is open to students from schools with 1101 students or more.

School size is based on the CHSAA count for the 2007-2008 school year.

Audition materials and procedures are the same for both bands.

A $5.00 fee is charged for each auditioning student.

Check should be made payable to "CBA"

JAZZ AUDITION PROCEDURES:

1.    Directors whose students wish to audition must be members of CBA.   Students auditioning must be    members of their school jazz program or equivalent program if no organized jazz band exists.

2.    All entries must be on quality cassette tapes or compact disc.

Entries must be recorded live with no editing.   Directors are responsible for checking entries.

3.    Use only ONE tape/CD per auditioning player.

4.    Each tape/CD should be labeled in the following manner:

      EXAMPLE:   Tape C/ Alto Sax/ Large School/#_____

5.    DO NOT label the tape/CD with student or school names.   DO NOT speak on the tape.

6.    Directors are responsibly for filling out master list Audition Form correctly.   This form MUST be    

      used.   No other form of communication will be accepted. Available on CBA website.

•  A $5 audition fee (checks payable to CBA) must accompany audition materials for each tape/CD.

•  Do not send materials registered mail.

•  Tapes/CDs and fees must be RECEIVED NO LATER THAN November 14, 2008 to be considered.

A list of students selected for the All-State Jazz Band will be mailed or faxed to the directors by December 1, 2008 of all who auditioned. Students who are placed in an ensemble will be notified immediately .

10.    Each student selected must return the confirmation letter, medical form, and the $30.00 participation fee by December 15, 2008.    Students who cannot accept a position must notify their director who must notify Rex Matzke at (719) 388-8858, within five days after notification of their acceptance.

JAZZ BAND AUDITION MATERIALS

The following audition materials should be put on tapes or CDs in the order given.  

NOTE:   Please use the tempo marking listed below if they differ from what is given on the audition materials!

HORNS: (scroll down for audition materials)

1.    Chromatic scale for the range of the instrument, up and down.

2.    Audition packet 'C'.   Fast Swing and Ballad ONLY at indicated metronome markings.  

      NOTE:   Metronome must be audible on all audition tapes.

3.    Optional (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED):

      a. Improvise two choruses of blues with a rhythm section or Aebersold play-along.

      b. Improvise one chorus on "Dig" found on Aebersold Vol. 7, (Miles Davis)

4.    PLEASE NOTE:   Brass players interested in auditioning for a lead chair must also play lead parts.

PIANO, GUITAR, BASS (scroll down for audition materials)

1.    Audition packet 'C'.   Fast Swing and Ballad ONLY at indicated metronome markings.  

      NOTE:   Metronome must be audible on all audition tapes.
